Coach Davis has 30 years of coaching experience at the high school and college levels and is presently the coach of the Vanguard University Lions, a program he has coached for 19 years. During his tenure at Vanguard, his teams have a record of 479-114 and Coach Davis has been named the WBCA’s NAIA Coach of the Year three times and Golden State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year seven times. His Lion teams have won the GSAC conference title ten times and under his direction they won their first-ever NAIA National Championship in 2008.
Coach Davis is well known in college basketball circles for his service as member of the Board of Directors for the WBCA, the Kodak Women’s Basketball All-America Committee, the NAIA Women’s Basketball Association, and as a coach for the USA Women’s Basketball team in 2005 and 2009.
Coach Davis has also coached and directed the Nike-sponsored Cal Swish club basketball team since 1998. During that time frame, Cal Swish has been a bracket champion at Oregon Trail ten times and overall tournament champion at Oregon Trail six times. Cal Swish has also won a number of premier viewing tournaments over the years, including the River City Classic, Music City Madness, and USJN Nationals. Coach Davis teams have been invited to participate in the Nike Nationals since that tournament’s inception in 2006. Cal Swish has made it to the Elite Eight at Nike Nationals nearly every year and was Nike Nationals champion in 2008.
Coach Davis has coached a large number of college All-Americans, McDonald’s High School All-Americans, and current and former WNBA players during his years of coaching.
Coach Mark Erickson
Coach Erickson has been coaching club basketball at the youth and high school levels since 1998, first with the NJB Stars where he coached the Stars to the 14u AAU Nationals in 2002. Coach Erickson joined Cal Swish in 2005 and has been coaching various Swish teams since joining the program.
Coach Steve Kavaloski
Coach Kavaloski has been coaching and organizing tournaments for girls basketball for over 30 years, basically founding girls’ club basketball in 1983. Long known for his Southern California Women’s Basketball teams that dominated club basketball for years with the likes of Cheryl Miller, Diana Taurasi, Jodi Anton, and Michelle Greco, Steve K has coached 17 national championship teams. Coach Kavaloski has been a member of the Board for AAU Girls Basketball and is well known for organizing first-class tournaments which he will continue to do for the Swish program.
Coach Jana Pearson
Coach Pearson, a native of Hatley, Miss., begins her first season as the assistant coach for the Vanguard Lion women's basketball program. Pearson played four seasons at Harding (Ark.) University (2003 - 2007) before
transitioning into the role of graduate assistant from 2007-2009 with the NCAA Division II program. Before coming to Vanguard, Pearson spent four years as the assistant coach for the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions under the helm of Coach Dale Neal. While there Pearson helped Coach Neal lead the Lady Lions to a record of 125-19, two final four appearances, and National runner-ups in 2014. Pearson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Counseling, both from Harding University.
Coach Mayia Michel
Coach Michel first joined the Cal Swish program as a high school player. She was a member of the Cal Swish team that won the 2009 Nike National Championship. She played four seasons at the University of Denver (2010-2014), before transitioning into a collegiate assistant coaching role. Coach Michel is in her third season as the assistant coach at University of La Verne women's basketball program. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media Studies and a master of Business Administration in Sports Management
Coach Jesse Vargas
Coach Jesse Vargas is entering his first year with Cal Swish. He will be coaching the 17U Red Team for Cal Swish. He started his coaching career in 2004 at Westminster HS, where he was a Varsity assistant and Freshmen Head Coach for the Boys Program from 2004-2010. In 2010 he switched over to be Associate Head Coach for the girl's basketball team at Westminster where he was mentored by Hall of Fame Coach Dick Katz. From 2010-2014 their teams won 3 Goldenwest League Championships and made the playoffs every year. Coach Vargas is now a Varsity Assistant Coach at California Power Mater Dei HS. He is entering his 4th season with the Monarchs, where he's been in charge of scouting, social media, website and player development. He's helped the Monarchs win 2 out of the last 3 SoCal Regional Championships (2015 & 2017) and 3 straight Trinity League Championships (2015, 2016 & 2017). He is excited to be part of the Cal Swish family and learn and be mentored by Cal Swish Head Coach Russ Davis.
